Invoice templates / Ireland
Invoice template for Ireland, with Revenue's VAT rules
For sole traders, freelancers and small companies in Ireland. Here is what Revenue says a VAT invoice must show, when it must be issued, what changes below the VAT thresholds and how to invoice a business in another EU country. The sample below downloads as a PDF, and Clodou writes the same invoice from one sentence.
What an invoice must show in Ireland
The date of issue
The date the invoice is issued. [1]
A unique sequential number
Each invoice carries a unique number in a sequence. [1]
Your details and VAT number
Your full name, address and VAT registration number as the supplier. [1]
Your customer
The customer's full name and address. [1]
What you supplied
The quantity and nature of the goods supplied, or the extent and nature of the services rendered. [1]
The date of supply
The date the goods or services were supplied. If a payment on account was made before the supply, also the date of that payment, when it differs from the date of issue. [1]
Unit prices before VAT
The VAT-exclusive unit price. [1]
Discounts
Any discounts or price reductions. [1]
VAT by rate, and the total VAT
A breakdown by rate of VAT, and the total VAT payable on the supply. [1]
Reverse charge and EU goods: the customer's VAT number
Under a reverse charge, the customer's VAT number and the note "reverse charge applies". For an intra-Community supply of goods, the customer's VAT number and the note "intra-Community supply of goods". [1]
Sample invoice
This is how Clodou prints an invoice for this country: same labels, taxes and layout as the PDF.

Rules worth knowing
If you are not registered for VAT
A trader who is not registered for VAT should not issue an invoice showing an amount of VAT. If you do, you are liable for the VAT shown and may face penalties. [2]
Registration is obligatory once your annual turnover goes over the thresholds: €42,500 if you supply only services, €85,000 if you supply goods. Below them you can choose to register. [3]
When to issue a VAT invoice
A VAT invoice must be issued within 15 days of the end of the month in which the goods or services were supplied. [4]
You must issue one when you supply another accountable person, a Department of State, a local authority, a body set up by statute, a person carrying on an exempt activity, or a business (not a private individual) in another EU Member State. [5]
If you are paid in advance, issue a VAT invoice for each payment, no later than the 15th day of the month after the one in which it was received. [6]
VAT rates and simplified invoices
From 1 January 2026: standard rate 23%, reduced rate 13.5%, second reduced rate 9%, livestock rate 4.8%. [7]
The standard rate applies to most goods and services, consultancy services among them. [8]
The zero rate applies to certain goods and services, including exports, certain food and drink, certain books, and clothing and footwear for children under 11. [9]
A simplified invoice is allowed when the amount is €100 or less: date of issue, your full name, address and VAT number, a description, and the VAT payable or the price before VAT. It cannot be used for intra-Community supplies. [10]
Clients in other EU countries, and foreign currency
For services to a business customer in another EU Member State: get the customer's VAT number and check it is valid, put it on the invoice, and indicate that the reverse charge applies. [11]
Under the reverse charge, the invoice does not show the VAT payable. [1]
Services to business customers outside the EU are in general not subject to VAT, but you keep proof that the customer is a business established outside the EU. [11]
An invoice in a foreign currency must also show the corresponding figures in euro, at the selling rate recorded by the Central Bank when the invoice is due to be issued. [1]
Make this invoice in Clodou
- Set your workspace country to Ireland: invoices are titled INVOICE, the tax line reads VAT, and your number and your client's print after "VAT no.". EUR is suggested as the currency, and each invoice can use another.
- Say what you supplied in one sentence. Clodou finds or creates the client, numbers the invoice INV-0001 onwards, and asks when a price is missing instead of guessing one.
- Prices go in before VAT, so the PDF shows the VAT-exclusive unit price, each VAT rate on its own line and the total. Lines can mix 23%, 13.5%, 9% and 0%; the PDF then adds a rate column and shows the amount each rate applies to. Not registered? Remove VAT from your default taxes in Settings and invoices carry no VAT.
- The notes print on the PDF: use them for the date of supply, "Reverse charge applies" for an EU business client, or your bank details. The footer carries your business name and legal status.
- After it goes out: payment reminders prepared as cards you approve before anything is emailed, partial payments with the balance left, quote to invoice in one step, monthly retainer drafts, and a CSV export with VAT per rate for your accountant. Undo works for 10 minutes and every change is in the activity log.

What Clodou does not do
- No compliance check. Clodou prints the fields on this page; it does not check that an invoice meets Revenue's rules. Your accountant does that.
- No VAT returns, no bookkeeping or ledger, no bank feeds, no payroll.
- No separate date-of-supply or discount field: the PDF prints the issue date, so the supply date and any discount go in the line description or the notes.
- No reverse charge mode: you set no VAT, put the client's VAT number in its field and write "Reverse charge applies" in the notes yourself.
- No currency conversion: an invoice in sterling or dollars does not show the euro figures Revenue asks for.
- No credit notes, no e-invoicing (Peppol), no client portal or e-signature, and no card processing (the Team plan prints your own payment link).
Questions
- What must be on a VAT invoice in Ireland?
- The date of issue, a unique sequential number, your full name, address and VAT number, the customer's full name and address, what you supplied and when, the unit price before VAT, any discounts, the VAT broken down by rate and the total VAT. Under a reverse charge, add the customer's VAT number and "reverse charge applies".
- When do I have to issue a VAT invoice?
- Within 15 days of the end of the month in which you supplied the goods or services. For a payment received in advance, no later than the 15th day of the month after you received it.
- Can a sole trader invoice without being registered for VAT?
- Yes, but the invoice must not show VAT: a trader who is not registered and shows VAT is liable for it and may face penalties. Registration is obligatory once annual turnover goes over €42,500 for services or €85,000 for goods; below that you can choose to register.
- How do I invoice a business in another EU country?
- For services to a business customer in another EU Member State, check the customer's VAT number, put it on the invoice and state that the reverse charge applies; the invoice does not show VAT. - Is there a simplified invoice in Ireland?
- Yes, for amounts of €100 or less: date of issue, your full name, address and VAT number, a description, and the VAT payable or the price before VAT. It cannot be used for intra-Community supplies.
