How common are late payments, and what do they cost the people waiting for the money? This page collects the late payment statistics we could verify on the publisher's own page. Each figure names who published it, when, who was surveyed, and what kind of source it is.

Most of these numbers come from vendor surveys: research published by companies that sell invoicing, payment or contractor tools. They are useful, but read them as indicators, not as official statistics. Every figure below was last checked on its source page on November 5, 2026.

Small business late payments in 2026

Among the sources we checked, the most recent data on overdue invoices comes from Intuit QuickBooks' 2026 Small Business Late Payments Report, published July 7, 2026.

  • 59% of businesses say at least some of their invoices are overdue by 30 days or more, up from 47% the year before.
  • Businesses with unpaid invoices are owed $17.7K on average, roughly the same as the previous year's $17.5K.
  • 39% of owners say a single late payment made it hard to cover payroll or bills in the past year.

How it was measured. The report draws on two surveys commissioned by Intuit QuickBooks: its ongoing quarterly Small Business Insights survey of small business owners and decision-makers (about 5,000 respondents per quarter), and an online survey of 1,305 US business owners with 0 to 250 employees, run in December 2025. QuickBooks sells accounting, invoicing and payment software, so this is a vendor survey.

The year before: 2025

QuickBooks' 2025 US Small Business Late Payments Report, published May 28, 2025, was based on a January 2025 survey of 2,487 US small businesses with 0 to 100 employees:

  • 56% were owed money from unpaid invoices, $17.5K per business on average.
  • 47% had at least some invoices overdue by more than 30 days.

The 2026 report compares itself with these figures (47% then, 59% now). The two editions don't describe the same sample, so read the change as a direction rather than a precise measurement.

Payment terms and overdue invoices

In the 2026 QuickBooks report, 55% of businesses on net-30 terms had overdue invoices, compared with 26% of businesses that require immediate payment.

This is a correlation, not proof that net 30 causes late payment. The report itself says payment terms alone don't explain every overdue invoice: some industries and clients require longer terms, and businesses that ask for payment upfront still meet late payers. Still, the gap is large. For what each term means and how to choose yours, see invoice payment terms explained.

Freelancer late payment statistics

We found fewer recent, citable figures on freelancers than on small businesses. Here are the two we could verify.

Remote (vendor research, February 2025). In a blog post published February 19, 2025, Remote, a company that sells contractor management tools, reported from its Contractor Management Report 2025 that:

  • 85% of freelancers have their invoices paid late at least some of the time;
  • just over 21% are paid late, or not at all, more than half the time.

The post doesn't describe the survey sample, so treat these figures as indicative.

Leapers (UK data, January 2026). Leapers' 2025 Mental Health in Freelancing Report, published January 7, 2026, is based on an online survey of 1,013 UK-based self-employed people run from October 1 to November 15, 2025:

  • 67.5% dealt with late payments in 2025;
  • 81.2% of those said late payment added to their stress.

As the report states, the survey was self-selecting (shared through UK freelancer and self-employed communities) and its results are unweighted. It is UK data, not US data.

Don't add these two sources together or compare them directly: they cover different countries, samples and questions.

Cash flow: what late payments cost

The QuickBooks figure above (39% of owners struggling to cover payroll or bills after one late payment) is the most direct link on this page between late payment and cash flow. A broader, non-vendor picture comes from the Federal Reserve Banks.

Their 2026 Report on Employer Firms, published March 3, 2026, presents findings from the 2025 Small Business Credit Survey: 6,525 responses from small employer firms with 1 to 499 employees across the US, collected from September 3 to November 14, 2025. In the prior 12 months:

  • 50% of firms named uneven cash flow as a financial challenge. The report's notes say this category includes collecting on receivables.
  • 54% named paying operating expenses as a financial challenge (the examples given are payroll, rent and inventory costs).

These figures are on page 3 of the full report (PDF). Two limits: uneven cash flow has causes other than late payment, and the survey uses a convenience sample. The report also notes that changes to the 2025 questionnaire mean its financial-challenge data aren't directly comparable with earlier years.

Time spent chasing late payments

The Time etc article The Big Price of Small Tasks reports a survey of 251 US business owners, conducted by Censuswide from September 22 to 28, 2023, and commissioned by Time etc, a virtual assistant company:

  • entrepreneurs spend 36% of an average 45.5-hour work week on administrative tasks;
  • in a typical week, 59% log expenses, 44% create invoices and 27% chase late payers.

Three limits: the survey defines entrepreneurs as owners of businesses in growth mode, trading for at least two years, and excludes freelancers and sole traders; it dates from 2023; and the page shows no publication date. It reports percentages, not the hours spent chasing payments.

How to read these numbers

  • Vendor surveys dominate. QuickBooks, Remote and Time etc sell products related to what they measure. Their data is useful, but it is not independent research. The Federal Reserve Banks' survey is not a vendor survey, but it uses a convenience sample.
  • Different people, places and years. US small businesses, freelancers, UK self-employed people and US employer firms are different groups. Don't average or add figures across sources.
  • Correlation is not causation. The net-30 finding shows two things that go together, not that one causes the other.
  • What we left out. Some late payment figures that circulate widely could not be traced to a primary page, or their primary source is several years old. They are not on this page.

What this means for a freelancer

The numbers point to a few practical habits:

  • Plan for late, not on time. If most freelancers are paid late at least some of the time, budget around when money usually arrives, not around the due date, and keep enough cash to ride out one late invoice.
  • Shorten terms and ask for deposits where you can. In the QuickBooks data, businesses on immediate terms were far less likely to have overdue invoices. A deposit before work starts, or billing in milestones, limits how much you can lose. See invoice payment terms.
  • Follow up on a schedule. Late payment is common enough that a reminder routine is part of invoicing, not a sign of a bad client. Use our payment reminder email templates and our scripts for asking a client for payment.
  • Know who owes you, every week. A weekly look at overdue invoices catches a problem at 7 days instead of 45.
  • Make it less personal. In Leapers' UK survey, most people who dealt with late payment said it added stress. A routine you set once turns chasing into a task, not a confrontation.

How Clodou helps

Clodou is an AI back office for freelancers and small teams, run by chat. It can't change how fast your clients pay, but it makes late invoices hard to miss and quick to chase. Ask "Who owes me money?" and it lists your overdue invoices; your daily brief and the Morning page show what is overdue and what is due today, and an optional email digest sends the same to your inbox. For an overdue invoice, Clodou drafts a reminder and shows an approval card: nothing is emailed until an owner or admin approves it. On the Team plan, a workspace can switch on automatic reminders, sent without a per-email approval. Invoices are emailed from Clodou with the PDF attached once approved, partial payments are recorded once approved, with the remaining balance shown, and on Team your own payment link (Stripe, PayPal or bank details) is printed on your invoices.

Clodou doesn't calculate late fees or interest, process card payments or collect debts. The Free plan includes 20 AI requests and 3 quotes or invoices a month; Solo is $29 and Team $79 a month per workspace, and every new workspace starts with a 14-day Team trial, no card needed.
